i has a number of smartphones under Rs 20,000 in India. On Wednesday the company added one more to the list: the Xiaomi Mi A3. But why? Let's first hear it directly from the company.

"Xiaomi Mi A3 is for users looking for stock Android experience at a budget," Xiaomi India Managing Director and Global VP Manu Kumar Jain told India Today Tech in an interaction. Adding, Head of Marketing Xiaomi India Anuj Sharma said, "with the Xiaomi Mi A3 the company aims to bring Android One experience to everyone."

Android One. That is the keyword here. It is also at the centre of the Mi A3 experience. On Wednesday Xiaomi launches the third-generation Mi A phone in India with a starting price of Rs 12,999. The phone is the Mi A3 and it is actually the cheapest Mi A series phone yet in India. In fact, the price came as a surprise because in the past Xiaomi had sold the Mi A phones, particularly at the launch, with a premium price believing that Android One software justified it.

For the first time there is a Mi A series phone with under Rs 15,000 price tag. After using the Mi A3 for a few days I can say that at Rs 12,999 the Xiaomi Mi A3 is a fantastic all-rounder smartphone. The phone goes on sale for first time in India tomorrow, August 23.

Jack is back

When the Mi A2 launched, Xiaomi was criticized for removing the 3.5mm headphone jack and expandable storage option from the phone. Xiaomi now acknowledges these mistakes, if you can call them mistakes, and rectifies them with the all-new Mi A3. With the Mi A3 Xiaomi brings back the 3.5mm headphone jack and as well as offers expandable storage support of up to 256GB. The Mi A2 also faced some tough time due to its boring design. With the Mi A3, Xiaomi solves that issue too. That brings me to the Mi A3 design


A compact phone with classy looks

The Xiaomi Mi A3 is a looker. The Mi A3 comes in three colours -- More than White, Not just Blue and Kind of Grey. That is fancy talk for white, blue and grey. My personal favourite colour option of the Mi A3 is white. The "More than White" version of the Mi A3 looks stunning in every way, largely because of the Gorilla Glass 5 used on the front and back of the smartphone. Not just that Xiaomi Mi A3 also includes Gorilla Glass 5 protection on the camera bump to improve the durability of the smartphone. Xiaomi calls the design "triple Gorilla Glass 5". This too is fancy talk. But the sum of the matter is that the Xiaomi Mi A3 is very well crafted and is a polished smartphone with curved glass and clean edges.




The build quality of the Xiaomi Mi A3 is impressive. The phone feels sturdy in the hands. More than the design and the build, I like the size of the Xiaomi Mi A3. The phone has a perfect size and feels absolutely right in the hands. In my very short time spent with the Mi A3 I was able to use the phone very well with just one hand with ease.

Overall I feel the Xiaomi Mi A3 is one of the best-looking smartphones at its price point right now. In fact, I believe that the Mi A3 is better looking than the Redmi Note 7 series. Xiaomi Mi A3 display, camera, battery and performance

As far as the display of the phone is concerned there are a couple of interesting bits here. Some good, some okay. The good bit is that the Xiaomi Mi A3 comes with a 6.08-inch Super AMOLED screen. OLED panels show punchier, deeper colours and that is a good thing. The Mi A3 display does show deep and dark colours. The okay bit is the resolution. The Mi A3 comes with a resolution of 1560 x 720 pixels. It's not FullHD (1080P). Instead it is HD (720P) but because the phone packs 1560 pixels diagonally Xiaomi calls its HD+ display. The reason why it's just okay is because on the 6-inch screen of Mi A3 -- it's a big screen -- you do notice the lack of extra pixels. A full display would have been crisper and nice here.

Beyond the HD+ aspect, the display of the Mi A3 is quite nice. After spending some time with the Mi A3 I can say that indoors the display of the phone works well. It shows nice colours. Outdoors, however, I find the display lacking on enough brightness. Outdoors keeping the brightness level of the phone to 100 per cent seems inadequate. The display of the Mi A3 is also very reflective. This is also for the first time that a Mi A series phone comes with an in-display fingerprint sensor. For the Mi A3 Xiaomi uses 7th gen fingerprint sensor. There's also AI-based face unlock support.




In other factors like camera and battery, the Mi A3 seems good enough. On the rear panel the Mi A3 equips three cameras -- 48MP primary Sony IMX 586 sensor + 8MP ultra-wide lens + 2MP depth sensor. On the front, the Xiaomi Mi A3 includes a 32MP camera. Notably, this is the best selfie camera sensor available in the industry right now in this price bracket. The Mi A3 comes with lots of AI camera features to help users click better pictures in all lighting conditions.

I’m yet to properly test the camera of the Xiaomi Mi A3 but in the little time I’ve spent with the phone I can say that the smartphone clicks decent pictures in good lighting. Photos shot outdoors turned out to be pretty good. Indoor the performance could have been better as I found the images to be grainy and lack details. It is also great to see a big battery inside the Mi A3. The Mi A3 comes packed with a 4030mAh battery with 18W fast charging support and USB Type C port. So far, for me the battery in the phone consistently lasts easily for one full day on a single charge.

Inside the Mi A3, Xiaomi uses the latest Snapdragon 600 series chipset aka Snapdragon 665 processor paired with up to 6GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The Mi A3 comes to India in two configurations 4GB RAM and 64GB storage or 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. The phone also comes with expandable microSD card with which you can add up to 256GB storage. The Mi A3 supports UFS 2.1 flash storage. I will have more to say about the overall performance of the smartphone in the full review in days to come.



No MIUI or OS ads

The key highlight of all Mi A series phones is the clean software. The Xiaomi Mi A series is all about Android One software, no MIUI, no Ads, and no third-party applications. The Mi A3 follows the same strategy. The Xiaomi Mi A3 is part of Google’s Android One programme and offers stock Android interface. However, Xiaomi has used the MIUI camera app in the Mi A3, because it believes this app is better than the stock Android camera app. This means that the camera app of the Mi A3 includes all the dedicated modes like Portrait, Night, Pro, 48MP, among others


Being an Android One device the Mi A3 is eligible to get upgraded to upcoming two Android generations -- Android Q and Android R (possibly that will be the name). It runs on Android 9 Pie right now. At the launch event, Xiaomi confirmed that the Mi A3 will be among the first phones to get Android Q update. The rollout timeline hasn't been revealed yet. Being an Android One device, the Xiaomi Mi A3 will also get faster security updates.
